The No-Face Imposter
O'Reilly Auto Parts · 842 S Pacific Ave, San Pedro, CA 90731, USA
I worked for an automotive store well over 6 years by this time, who's name I'll leave up to you to decipher, so I'll call it Shamrock's for this experience. The year was 2019, I was in a dark moment in my life, dealing with grief and loss, trying to get back into the mix of daily routines. Working the closing shifts as the manager in charge most nights gave me a sense of purpose and thus helped out.
For this particular store we were a small team of about 6 employees, including the general and assistant manager, and delivery drivers. Which left me and 1 other coworker who we'll call Josh. He and I worked together most nights, and the part of town we were in was just south of Downtown San Pedro, wasnt too bad of a reputation, but had potential to be.
One night, we were putting our merchandise away, when a customer walks in asking if we could test his car battery. Now, unlike most stores, our entrance was in the back of the business. We kept the street side closed to the fact we were always short staffed and it was all too easy for people to enter and walk out with products before we knew what happened. So this long sloped hallway leading to the back is where Josh and the gentleman walked out of to go test the battery.
After a couple of minutes, another customer walks in, and asked if I was able to bench test his alternator. I told him it'd be no problem, may take about 5 minutes. So he walked out to have a smoke, said he will be right back.
As I'm configuring the bench tester, which is tucked behind the battery racks, facing the bathroom door next to the entrance/exit hallway, I hear the phone ring. Almost at the same time I hear the door open and shut quickly, followed by the sound of a rain jacket chafing. Without looking up I ask "Yo Josh get that line please? I'm a bit tied up with this alternator"
No reply.
Phone still ringing.
I felt I was being watched.
So I looked up at the curved mirror we have on top, and what I saw still gives me chills to this day.
I saw what I thought was Josh in his jacket, casually and hastily walking in to the counter area. Only problem was, he---it, didn't have a face. I could make out his clothing, his hat, jacket, the green of his collar under his jacket, and even the fibers of his hair, all clear as day. But where his face should've been, his ears his neck, was a black void. Yet I felt it staring at me through the mirror. Heavy footsteps just 3 feet away divided by a shelf...yet he seemed to glide in and turn the corner behind our counter.
It took me a minute...I told myself "it's Josh, I'm just seeing things." So I yelled out again, "Josh answer that phone please."
Then I heard the familiar sound of the door alarm *Bing Bong*
And a familiar voice...it was Josh
"Hey boss I'm going to need a second opinion on this guy's battery, I'm not getting a good test"
I dropped what I was doing and practically ran to the counter to finally answer the phone. After dealing with the phone call, I turned my attention to Josh and asked "did you not come in earlier? Did you see anyone else walk in while you were out there?"
He was a little freaked, but said no, said it was empty, just the guy with the battery and a guy on his phone smoking.
I told him to check behind all our back shelves, I checked the store front. Nobody.
After he saw how freaked I was, he asked what was wrong.
I told him that I saw him in the mirror, and he agreed he'd be just as freaked out as I was.
But this location has had its fair shares of paranormal experiences, I've heard of objects flying off of shelves, to hearing whistling and voices, to seeing people walking around when there shouldnt be. And come to find out that in the 1930's through 50's the location operated as a funeral home.
Safe to say I don't work there anymore, but it wouldn't be the last experience I have in this town.
